Paul Jernberg's Sublime Mass of St Philip Neri : CDs Now Available, Listen to Excerpts Here

A CD of the Mass of St Philip Neri composed by Paul Jernberg is now available from www.pauljernberg.com. Paul is Composer in Residence and Choir Director at Thomas More College of Liberal Arts and Musical Director at St Lucy's and St Monica’s churches in Methuen, Massachusetts.

The whole Mass is sung - so the priest intones, and the choir responds on behalf of the congregation. The recording has been done by the Chicago-based Schola Cantorum of St. Peter the Apostle, under the direction of conductor J. Michael Thompson.

This has been released to rave reviews from his fellow musicians; see for example comments from musicians and bloggers, including our own Peter K at the Chant Cafe, here. Charles Culbreth, a nationally respected choir director and composer, who has been a regular contributor at Chant Cafe and an important voice over the years in the Church Music Association of America commented ‘With the consistency of his expertise with Byzantine homophony, combined with near perfection and sheer genius of the harmonic/melodic construct of Paul Jernberg’s setting, it cannot be just coincidence that Palestrina’s patron bears the dedication of this Mass.’

“Zeal for the Liturgy” - All Saints and All Souls Events: Long Island and San Diego

The indefatigable Ben recently noted in foro privato the following quote from Sacrosanctum Concilium : “Zeal for the promotion and restoration of the liturgy is rightly held to be a sign of the providential dispositions of God in our time, as a movement of the Holy Spirit in His Church. It is today a distinguishing mark of the Church’s life, indeed of the whole tenor of contemporary religious thought and action.” (no. 43) These words were written in 1963 with an optimism that for many turned to bitter disappointment very quickly; I was raised in a very Catholic part of the United States, but one where there was almost no decent liturgical music to be heard at all. So it seems to me at least that our most recent set of posts here on NLM are a sign of something very positive happening in the Church today. We have had an unusual number of requests to publicize liturgical events for All Saints’ and All Souls’, events which will feature the music of Palestrina, Victoria, and Byrd, just to name a few. Of course, such events are still exceptional, but they are less so than they were 30 years ago, and will continue to become more common. If you have the opportunity to go to such a liturgy this weekend, remember to say a pray for those who would love to attend something like it and cannot.

Here are two notices from places with special events for both All Saints’ and All Souls’; there will be another post later today for events just on All Souls’.

Long Island, New York

Events sponsored by the St Agnes Institute and Juventutem; see poster below, and the website of the St Agnes Institute here and here.

All Souls Requiem at Holy Innocents NYC

On November 3rd, 2014, the Church of the Holy Innocents in midtown Manhattan (NYC) will be observing the Commemoration of All Souls' Day with a traditional Solemn Requiem Mass at 6pm. The Choir will sing the Missa pro defunctis for five voices by Cristobal Morales. Fr. Carlos Viego will be the Celebrant of the Mass. Tapers will be distributed to be lit and held at the Gospel, during the Canon, and for the Rite of Absolution.

During the summer I was fortunate enough to visit this church. One has an immediate and very tangible sense of devotion as one walks through the door, from the centre of busy Manhattan into the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. There were many kneeling in silent adoration during Exposition and there were hundreds of devotional candles lit in front of numerous statues of Our Lady and the Saints. I took this photo on my phone while I was there and it has been my 'wallpaper' ever since. I had heard about Holy Innocents but I hadn't realised what a special place it is, and I look forward to returning there soon.

The Ecclesial Purpose of All Saints as Seen in the Martyrologies

First and foremost, a blessed Solemnity of All Saints to all NLM readers! Gaudeamus omnes in Domino, diem festum celebrantes sub honore Sanctorum omnium:de quorum solemnitate gaudent angeli, et collaudant Filium Dei. Let us all rejoice in the Lord celebrating the feast in honor of all the saints, in which solemnity the angels rejoice and praise the Son of God. (Introit, November 1st, EF & OF)
My colleague Dr. Jeremy Holmes has posted a wonderful article today at his blog, New Song, called "The Spirit of the Solemnity of All Saints." He looks at what the old and new Martyrologies tell us about this feastday, and then asks the question: What does it mean to say we observe all the saints in order that "we may be crowned by their triumph in the sight of the divine majesty unto endless ages"?

The Feast of All Saints - 2014

From the Breviary according to the use of the Roman Curia, 1529, the beginning of the sermon for the fifth day in the Octave of All Saints:
Today, our virginal mother the Church, spread throughout the whole world by the work of the Holy Spirit, rejoices with spiritual joys, crowned by the triumph of so great a solemnity. For on this day, by a decree of Pope Boniface (IV), a station is kept by the clergy in the oratory which was once known as the Pantheon, but is now called Saint Mary at the Martyrs, since he had consecrated it to the glory of the mother of God and all of Christ’s martyrs. Thenceforth it was confirmed by apostolic authority that the faithful throughout the world should be keep this day as a great feast in honor of the all the Saints, and hold it in honor every year with solemnity and joy. For it right that we should celebrate the memory of those unto whose glory we long to come; and for this reason, holy mother the Church decided to celebrate the feast of all the Saints, that she may strive to call those who keep it to imitate them, and come to share in their glory.
This is the fifth year in which we will keep the feast of All Saints by following a sermon from the Roman Breviary of 1529. On the feast itself, and each day of its octave, the sermon for Matins follows the same pattern. The first lesson is about the institution of the feast on the part of Pope St Boniface IV (608-15), when he dedicated the Pantheon in Rome as a church. The second lesson is about God, and is followed by six lessons that descend though the hierarchy of the Saints: the Virgin Mary, the Angels, Patriarchs and Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs and Confessors. (Virgins and other holy women are usually mentioned along with the Virgin Mary.) The ninth reading is taken from a homily of St Augustine on the Gospel of the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5, 1-12; I do not include these ninth readings in this series, since they can easily be found in the Breviary of St Pius V.

Italy, as represented by the painter Cimabue in the crossing vault of the upper basilica of St Francis in Assisi, 1277-80. The Pantheon, one of the most distinctive buildings on the peninsula, and the best preserved ancient Roman structure in the capital of Christendom, is seen in the middle of the image, slightly to the right, with the famous hole in its dome, known as the “oculus - the eye.” The Colosseum is shown beneath it and to the right; they are not actually next to each other, nor is the Colosseum itself actually green. The pigments of Cimabue’s many frescoes in the Basilica of St Francis have decayed over the centuries, creating some very strange color effects as we see them today; this is why St Mark the Evangelist, in the upper middle, has black and green skin. The churches behind the Pantheon are St John in the Lateran and St Peter ’s.
The oculus of the Pantheon seen though the grill over the doors.
Each year, the  Fraternity of St Peter’s Roman parish, Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini, covers the main altar with relics on the feast of All Saints.

The Feast of All Saints - 2014; The Praise of God in His Saints

From the Breviary according to the use of the Roman Curia, 1529, the continuation of the sermon for the fifth day in the Octave of All Saints.
Since we wish to venerate all the Saints, first of all let us venerate and praise with particular zeal the Lord God, whom we are ordered by the prophet to praise in His Saints. (Psalm 150, 1) “Let my soul be filled as with marrow and fatness”, he says, (Psalm 62, 8), that is, just as the soul is made perfect by interior faith and the perfection of exterior virtues, so the voice of the faithful must praise him with the sound of exultation. The prophet’s meaning is this: Just as from a vessel comes forth the odor of that which fills it, so divine praise comes forth from the soul that is full of the love of God, expressed with the sound of exultation and devotion. By this praise God is appeased and honored, and grace conferred upon man for his good. “The sacrifice of praise shall glorify me: and there is the way by which I will show him the salvation of God.” (Psalm 49, 23)

God, the Church and the Saints, from the sacristy of St Peter’s Basilica. I do not know the date or author of this painting; on stylistic grounds, it seems to be a work of the later 16th or very early 17th century. God is seen at the top and to the right, the Church as a female figure to the left, the Virgin Mary in the middle, surrounded by Saints of many different orders. King David, the author of the Psalms, is in the lower right hand corner with his harp, amid other prophets. This painting must have once been displayed in the basilica on the feast of All Saints, since the Angels surrounding the figure of the Church have tablets in their hands on which are written the Beatitudes, from the Gospel of the feast, Matthew 5, 1-12.

From the Breviary according to the use of the Roman Curia, 1529, the continuation of the sermon for the fifth day in the Octave of All Saints:
Since we wish to go through the various ranks of the Saints, it remains for us to venerate with singular devotion Mary, the Mother of God, who is adorned with chastity above all others, and after Her, the rosy band of the holy virgins, and other devout groups of women. Of these, some sought to preserve their virginity intact within the bonds of marriage, though this was known only to God and to their own guardian Angels. Others withdrew from the din of the world, and being closed in their monasteries, though still virgins, begot many sons and daughters by their holy examples, much as if they had been married according to the flesh, and begot a long line of descent.
